The African swine fever (ASF) is an international challenge and a threat to rural areas, the environment and the European pork market. Cross-border cooperation is needed to tackle this disease which has become epidemic in several EU member states and regions.
This opinion calls upon the European Commission to undertake stronger measures and legislative solutions to regain balance in the development of rural areas by regulating the population of boars, which are main carriers of the ASF virus, in Central and Eastern Europe.
It is necessary to immediately and radically increase funds for the fight against ASF, both for ad hoc measures and for research on ASF, including an effective vaccine against this disease, the rapporteur believes.
