Summit of EPP Regional and Local Leaders in Bucharest with Manfred Weber sends a strong message for an efficient, united and democratic European Union rooted in its cities and regions

On 16 March, more than 4000 politicians from Romania and all over the EU gathered at the Summit of EPP Regional and Local Leaders together with the EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber to promote a pro-European vision for the future of Europe and to adopt the EPP Local and Regional Manifesto in view of the 2019 European elections.

The Summit was hosted by the National Liberal Party of Romania (PNL), the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions (EPP-CoR) and the European People’s Party (EPP).

Manfred Weber, EPP Lead Candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission, presented his vision for a Better Europe in front of mayors and local and regional leaders.

During the Summit’s high-level debate on Europe is our common future, Klaus Iohannis, President of Romania, Ludovic Orban, President of PNL, and Antonio López-Istúriz White, MEP and Secretary General of the EPP, sent a powerful message for a united, value-based Europe that is close to its citizens, withstands populist pressures and provides sustainable solutions and opportunities for all.

During debates with mayors and regional leaders, the Summit showcased concrete examples on how EPP politicians deliver results to improve the daily life of people in our cities and regions. Introducing the EPP Local and Regional Manifesto in view of the 2019 European elections, Michael Schneider, President of EPP-CoR, presented the long-term vision of local and regional politicians that work closest to the EU citizens and are best placed to rebuild trust in the European project.

Ana Lidia Pereira, President of EPP Youth, encouraged the EPP family to continue working together with young people to create a better Europe. Other youth members from TNL, the youth organisation of the PNL and YEPP also shared their ideas on how Europe should be shaped in the future.

The Summit also presented EU-funded projects that have positively contributed to people’s daily lives in EPP-led cities and regions.
