On 9 March 2018, the European People’s Party, together with Political Party GERB of Bulgaria, will launch the EPP Grassroots Engagement in view of the 2019 European Elections with the motto “Europe starts in your village/city/region.”
An initiative by EPP regional and local leaders to restore confidence and increase ownership of the EU, the engagement aims to make sure that people living in Europe’s cities and regions can have their say on Europe ahead of the EU elections in 2019. The launch event takes place in Sofia Tech Park upon the invitation of Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov, President of the European People’s Party, Joseph Daul, and President of the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions, Michael Schneider.
Other confirmed speakers include:
• Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia
• Andrianos Giannou, President of EPP Youth
• Doris Pack, President of EPP Women, President of the Robert Schuman Institute
• Virgilio Falco, Chairman of European Democrat Students
• Ludovic Orban, President of the National Liberal Party, Romania
• Dominik Schrott, Austrian People’s Party
• Rafał Trzaskowski, Civic Platform, Poland, EPP Vice-President
The event will be moderated by Dara Murphy, Vice-President of the EPP and Campaign Director for the 2019 EU elections.
More than 400 local mayors and regional politicians, EPP members of the European Parliament and of the European Committee of the Regions as well as eminent guests from all over Europe are expected to attend, giving their support to this initiative. The engagement envisages a series of EPP local dialogues in all EU Member States. The feedback from these events will be shared with the EPP members of the two political assemblies of the EU: the Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions, as well as with the EPP Spitzenkandidat, with a view to contributing to the next mandate of the European institutions.
The first EPP Local Dialogue will take place on 9 March, directly after the launch of the Grassroots Engagement. During a debate on the theme “Europe Starts in Sofia – Youth perspectives and the future of Europe“, citizens living and working in Sofia will have the chance to share their views on Europe.
The morning of 9 March will also see a separate EPP high-level debate focusing on “Regions and Cities Investing in Education to Strengthen EU Values” in the presence of Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. The full day’s agenda has been organised in partnership with the Political Party ‘Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria’ (GERB).
Webstreaming of the events will be made available on the homepage of this website.
