The EPP-CoR Group recently organised an EPP Local Dialogue in Amaroussion, hosted by Yannis Ioannidis, EPP-CoR member, to discuss pressing issues surrounding climate change. The event was moderated by Anna Zachariadou, Deputy International Secretary of Greece’s governing centre-right New Democracy party. She opened with a brief presentation on the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), emphasising the importance of Amaroussion’s participation in the EPP Local Dialogue series and its commitment to addressing climate challenges.

In a short video message, Olgierd Geblewicz, President of the EPP-CoR, underscored that climate change remains a top priority for the Committee of the Regions. He praised members for their dedication to exchanging best practices on the issue. Niky Kerameus, Minister of Employment, also sent a video message, highlighting the essential role of local governments in the fight against climate change.

Yannis Ioannidis, Amaroussion’s Vice Mayor for Environment, spoke about the specific impacts of climate change on the city. He cited alarming phenomena, including rising temperatures, effects on local flora and fauna, and significant changes in rainfall patterns that affect the city’s water resources. Ioannidis outlined the municipality’s proactive measures to address these issues, showcasing the unique capabilities of local governments in confronting climate-related challenges.

Spyros Stathoulis, Amaroussion’s alternate mayor, discussed the city’s current engagement in various EU projects, initiatives, and funding programmes related to climate change, as well as the next steps. He stressed the EU's role in mobilising local governments and expressed satisfaction with the growing awareness of climate issues in Greece—not only at the governmental level but also among citizens.

Nektarios Kalatzis, President of European Local Leaders (ELL), highlighted the contributions of young politicians across the EU in addressing climate challenges. He noted that while environmental issues are a priority for young people, more youth empowerment and participation are essential to shift the political narrative in Europe, especially in Greece. He argued that young people possess the knowledge and enthusiasm necessary for driving meaningful change.

Katerina Vourlaki, Municipal Councillor of Amaroussion, Head of the municipality’s Gender Equality Committee, and a health journalist, introduced the concept of “Healthy Cities.” She connected environmental health to citizens’ well-being, illustrating how factors like clean air significantly contribute to public health and underscoring that sustainability spans a wide range of areas.

Finally, Panagiotis Makropodaras, President of ONNED, the youth branch of New Democracy, spoke on the challenges young people face in contributing to climate action. He outlined initiatives and opportunities ONNED provides for youth involvement and shared his vision for expanding these efforts in the future.
