I welcome the European Commission's proposal for a European Agenda for Migration. It is an ambitious programme providing a European response based on the shared solidarity between the Member States - Michael Schneider, President of the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions stated today.
This approach as outlined by Commissioner Avramopoulos offers a promising response to combat the trafficking of people, manage immigration in a fair way and save lives. However, support to local communities when managing emergencies and effective integration policies are necessary. The decision to use the European Social Fund (ESF) to better integrate migrants is endorsed by the EPP Group in the CoR - added Michael Schneider.
The European Committee of the Regions will adopt a "Resolution for a sustainable EU approach on migration" at its next plenary session on 4 June 2015.
