A successful Europe depends on smart regions and cities, Dr Michael Schneider, President of the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions, said at the European Democrat Students' (EDS) Winter University today. Building on the success of a Study Visit dedicated to digital and entrepreneurial skills last year and organised in partnership with EDS, he also stressed the need to establish better conditions for young people to start their own businesses, innovate and support the regional economy thanks to a boost in entrepreneurial talent.

"Our cities and regions are increasingly interconnected and interdependent. I therefore welcome the EDS motion on "Smart and Green Cities". At the same time, we also need to develop more synergies between urban and rural areas to enhance territorial cohesion all over the EU and reduce the investment gaps that exist." This was the main message from President Schneider in a speech entitled "Smart Regions and Cities-Europe of tomorrow", which he delivered on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the EPP's student network.

Turning to smart specialisation strategies, the EPP Group President inferred that they should be future-oriented strategies, which stimulate research and innovation. "It is all about identifying areas in which regions or cities can perform better, to engage policy-makers, entrepreneurs, scientists and citizens" he said.

Taking the opportunity to stress the importance of the Schengen area for regions and cities, President Schneider added: "Many of us in today's dynamic world, students, workers or entrepreneurs, are in the same situation: we are constantly on the move, from one city or region to another, making transitions across national borders. The costs of returning to a non-Schengen era are therefore too much."
