Speaking at today’s European People’s Party (EPP) Summit, Sari Rautio, President of the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions (EPP-CoR), underlined that housing is an essential element of Europe’s security and that security and defence start at home.

Rautio stressed that for EPP mayors and local leaders, ensuring citizens have access to decent and affordable housing is a top priority — not only from a social perspective but also as a driver of Europe’s competitiveness.

“We can tackle housing challenges by working together — by providing the right instruments, learning from best practices, and ensuring that while decisions are made locally and regionally, action at the EU level also supports these efforts,” Rautio said. “From EU funds to simplification measures, we can help mayors deliver for their citizens.”

She also highlighted the importance of pursuing climate goals while maintaining Europe’s competitiveness and attractiveness for investment.

On defence, Rautio reaffirmed the EPP-CoR’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction. She expressed support for the use of frozen Russian assets, while underlining that EU funds must also continue to strengthen Europe’s regions and industries and ensure that the single market delivers its full potential.
