By providing easy and free access to data, the European Union wants to encourage innovation and unleash further economic potential. The EU institutions already have an extensive catalogue of open datasets, covering many different aspects, including Politics, Law, Transparency and Finance, which can be retrieved through the EU Open Data Portal. Moreover, this year saw the first Diplohack Brussels, hosted by the Council of the European Union and the Netherlands Presidency. At the same time, the rise in open data has enabled a few, innovative journalists to tell powerful stories and to back them up with interactive graphics.
