Reports from the journalists at the Winter University 2011
"Radio broadcasting reaches a massive audience throughout all regions and cities in Europe. In fact, between 60 and 85% of the EU population on average listens to radio for at least 2 or 3 hours per day" began Michel Lebrun, 1st Vice-President of the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions, in his introductory speech for the 2011 Winter University for local and regional media. "You also fulfil a key role in the media landscape, particularly as a source of local content, and encourage innovation, creativity and diversity of content."
Over the three days, fifty journalists representing local radio from across the EU met to debate the future of local and regional radio broadcasting in Brussels. Covering topics as diverse as radio spectrum to the rise of web-based and social media, the Winter University was an opportunity to debate current issues of high perninence with colleagues from the whole of Europe.
Journalist feedback:
-
Good presentations, very useful, helping a lot with EU issues and where to find sources.
-
I found it very interesting for me because it is for me a window on the future our media.

The EC-Visit was very useful. It was an opportunity to get an impression of the daily business there. To be part of the midday press briefing, to take a glance at the quantities of the dispensed press material in a dozen languages concerning a dozen issues, to listen to the caleidoscope of voices in all the languages of Europe, this all delivers a sustainable impression of a complex machine that works.
