The European People's Party Group in the Committee of the Regions (EPP/CoR) held a seminar entitled "Life without gas and oil?" on 7 October 2008, under the auspices of the Open Days: European Week of Regions and Cities. The seminar was an opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge on the rising costs of gas and oil and Europe's potential to find alternative energy supplies. Isidoro Gottardo, President of the EPP Group stresses that "cooperation with regional and local authorities means that Europe will be able to develop environmentally friendly energy sources and innovative technologies, which in turn will contribute to a more sustainable future."
Europe is currently the largest importer of oil and gas, buying 82% percent of its oil and 57% percent of its gas from third-party states. However, in the current international context, the EU is facing a triple challenge in terms of energy security, climate change and the struggle to compete on the international market. Moreover, the increasing demand from oil and gas means that there will be an insufficient supply to meet these requirements.
