Closed innovation systems, which relied solely on industry for their research, are a thing of the past. The EPP Group workshop at OPEN DAYS therefore aimed to stress that a successful innovation policy for the twenty-first century must embrace an environment of open innovation where collaborative networks, online communities and clusters can all play a role in smart specialisation strategies. Speakers debated the trend towards digital entrepreneurs, which have been described as the missing link between Europe's Innovation Union and Digital Agenda flagship initiatives.
