WHAT? WORKSHOP: Promoting and protecting the tastes of Europe's regions and cities 08A14

WHY? The quality of Europe’s agricultural and agri-food products is widely acknowledged and consumers are asking for clearer labelling of their food so that they can better support local farms and companies. This seminar, from the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions, aims to analyse whether coordinated EU investment for this sector's 285,000 SMEs could tip the competitive balance in Europe's favour. Participants will gain an understanding of the EU funds available to support the promotion of local and regional produce as well as the new EU promotion and labelling legislation for the agriculture sector thanks to presentations from Europe's leading policy-makers and practitioners. The debate will be split into two panels: Session 1: Information provision and promotion measures for local agricultural products Session 2: Labelling for local products: A help or a hindrance to competition
WHO? Pedro Sanz Alonso, President of the autonomous community of La Rioja and CoR rapporteur on information provision and promotion measures for agricultural products on the internal market and in third countries W.H. Hester Maij, Member of the Executive Council of the Province of Overijssel and rapporteur on an Action Plan for the future of Organic Production in the European Union Mihail Dumitru, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission Other speakers to be added including a representative of the European Association of Craft, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Food Forum (UEAPME Food Forum) and the  European Farmers and Agri-Cooperatives (COPA-COGECA)
AND The workshop will be followed by a networking event: 17.00 - 17.30 This will contain a 'Market-place of best practice in the field of EU financial support for local and regional produce' as well as an opportunity to sample some regional specialities. An #EUFoodChat will also be organised on Twitter a week before the workshop to enable interested parties to contribute to the debate.
