Michael Schneider, President of the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions congratulates Antonio Tajani, who was formally elected yesterday as the new President of the European Parliament. The decision of the MEPs marks a new opening with the key political EU institutions and bodies led by decision-makers from all parts of Europe, from East to West and South to North: Donald Tusk at the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker at the European Commission, Antonio Tajani at the European Parliament and Markku Markkula at the European Committee of the Regions.

Congratulating Antonio Tajani on the new role, Michael Schneider expressed his wish for fruitful cooperation between the two political chambers: CoR and EP – "we are proud of our common achievements so far and also have common plans for the future. I am certain that with such an experienced politician as Mr Tajani in the lead, we may look forward to the fulfilment of our political goals with confidence".

President Schneider added: "We hope that in respect of the subsidiarity principle, under the new leadership of the European Parliament, the voice of Europe's regions, cities and municipalities will be heard and taken into account in its political decisions in line with the Treaties".

The EPP-CoR looks forward to working together with the newly elected President of the European Parliament and hopes for President Tajani's visit to the CoR in the close future. Key areas for development during this mandate include looking into the future of EU's Cohesion Policy after 2020, with Michael Schneider as the CoR rapporteur on the dossier, as well as stimulating investments, growth and jobs in the EU.
