The Energy Union is in full motion, but the contribution and involvement of local and regional authorities is of paramount importance for its success. These were the opening words of Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice-President, during his address to the Committee of the Regions on 8 July. Turning to the legislative contribution to the Energy Union, the Commissioner welcomed the CoR's draft opinion, which is being prepared by Pascal Mangin and which calls for a stronger focus on consumers' empowerment and small-scale local renewables projects to cut energy bills.

"I fully share some of the priorities raised in the paper, namely: the focus on consumers, promoting energy efficiency, protection of vulnerable consumers, the priority of adequate interconnections and infrastructure, innovation as a booster for employment and the importance of the external dimension" he said.

Marek Woźniak called the Energy Union "a strategic project for Europe" and asked the Commission to focus on reducing import dependency at a time when many EU regions face significant political pressure.

Responding to concerns that the vast knowledge and experience of local and regional authorities are not sufficiently incorporated, Commissioner Šefčovič stated: "There is no other way to bring about the energy transition other than working with the local authorities."

Pascal Mangin's opinion will be presented for adoption during the CoRs' October Plenary Session.
